The Glendale fire near Bellevue has burned over 10 thousand 681 acres at last check and has forced residents in the Croy Creek and Rock Creek Road west areas to evacuate. A lightning strike Monday appears to be the cause. The Wapiti fire burning between Lowman and Stanley continues to burn this morning causing smoke in the area. So far 108 thousand acres have burned, and crews have reported 2-percent containment. Highway 75 remains open, but Highway 21 is currently closed.

Travel volumes are expected to drop heading into the Fall, and gas prices could follow suit. According to AAA, Idaho’s average price for a gallon of regular is $3.58, which is two cents less than a week ago, five cents less than a month ago, and 59 cents less than a year ago. Meanwhile, the national average currently sits at $3.33 per gallon, which is three cents less than a week ago, 15 cents less than a month ago, and 48 cents less than a year ago. AAA predicts that the next uptick in travel will be Thanksgiving.

Idaho’s first two human West Nile virus infections this year were identified in a female Canyon County resident who is over the age of 60 and a male Ada County resident who is also over the age of 60. The Canyon County person was hospitalized with the infection but has been discharged.

Patrons of the Twin Falls School district will decide the fate of a 7-point 2-million-dollar levy in November. The proposed levy would replace the current $5.7 million levy that expires this year. The two year levy would fund armed security guards at elementary schools, school resource officer at secondary schools and fund salaries and benefits for over 60 empoyees.

36-year-old Zhou Ping of Boise appeared in a Jerome County courtroom yesterday charged with felony vehicular manslaughter. Ping is charged with causing a five vehicle pileup Friday afternoon at the 93-25 junction in Jerome County. One Jerome man died and several were injured.

Traffic in Twin Falls along Kimberly Road from Blue Lakes to Eastland will be slowed starting this morning as workers close 2 of the 4 lanes. Workers are upgrading the main water lines. The closure will remain in place through November. Pause during the winter and resume next April.


SPORTS

After winning the title of "Best Attraction for Sports Fans" in the U.S. last year, Boise State's blue turf has been nominated once again for the honor as a USA TODAY expert panel released the candidates for the 2024 10 Best Readers' Choice travel awards. The nomination follows last year's first place win over multiple sport-specific museums and the "Field of Dreams" movie site. The top 10 attractions will be determined by an online vote. Fans are allowed to vote once per day until Monday, September 30 at 10 a.m.

The Hagerman Pirates are coming off of an appearance in the 1A Division 2 state semifinals and return an all-state caliber receiver and multiple all-conference honorees. Head coach Bill Hicks has a squad that absolutely could reach the postseason and potentially make noise once it is there. But there are two key caveats that need to be discussed. First, the Pirates move up a classification this year to 2A. And secondly, even though the team only graduated two senior starters, it is two pivotal starters that will need to be replaced in 1st Team All-State lineman Alex Asher and 1st Team All-Conference Wyatt Hoskovec. That makes the return on all-conference honoree Alex Johnson, a senior, crucial.

Toby Lapp takes over as the head football coach at Hansen High School, his second tenure as the program’s leader, looking to replenish valuable depth after six seniors graduated off of the 2023 roster of 14 players. Hansen is coming off of a one-win season and has just eleven wins in the past six seasons. Eight-man power Carey returns to the conference after playing the last two years in the Snake River Conference. The Sawtooth also features Camas County, who reached the state championship game, and perennial toughie Dietrich. Hansen will host both of those teams, with Dietrich making the 40-minute drive south on October 4. Two weeks later, Camas County comes to town on October 18.

From the scoreboard from games played locally yesterday, first to boys soccer where Wood River defeated Canyon ridge 2 to 1. Columbia and Mountain Home tied it up with 2 each. It was Madison 2 Burley 2 For the girls, Burley and Blackfoot tied it up with 3 each. Shelley shut out Minico 4 to 0. Wood River outlasted Canyon Ridge 1 to 0.

On today’s high school sports schedule, first for Boys Soccer, the Sun Valley Community School travels to Bliss, Wendell goes to Buhl. Gooding travels to Declo. Kimberly travels to Filer. For the girls, Sun Valley Community to Bliss, Wendell visits Buhl, Gooding to Declo, Kimberly to Filer.
