An alleged gang member is behind bars in southern Idaho and currently awaits extradition after a chase that started in Box Elder County. 35 year old Deryez Santos Espinoza was chased down by the U.S. Marshals Office in Malta after leading Police on a multi-state chase. Espinoza was under investigation for a parole violation. Marshals say it was for possession of firearms, discharge of deadly weapons, and drug distribution.
The Idaho Transportation Department is preparing to shift traffic from the outside lanes of I-84 into the newly constructed lanes in the median between Jerome and Twin Falls. The shift will occur over multiple weekends in September following Labor Day, allowing crews to being work on the outside lanes of I-84 as they continue to widen the interstate to three lanes in each direction. Wood River Valley air quality plummeted overnight as winds continued to push smoke from the Wapiti Fire and Middle Fork Complex south toward Blaine County. The DEQ issued an air quality advisory for Blaine County due to the wildfire smoke. It was scheduled to remain in effect until 11 a.m. today.
Idaho Attorney General Raul Labrador’s office says state law prohibits law enforcement from keeping a list of firearms or firearm owners unless the records were part of a criminal investigation or prosecution. In an email to Sen. Glenneda Zuiderveld of Twin Falls, Chief of Staff Phil Skinner cites an Idaho Code passed in 2023. The bill was named the “Second Amendment Financial Privacy Act.”
Idaho students are less likely to be chronically absent than in other states and state superintendent Debbie Critchfield says it’s largely because Idaho students spent more time in class during the pandemic. Just 16.1% of Idaho’s students were chronically absent last school year.
In Twin Falls, a bicyclist was injured when an SUV struck him in a crosswalk near the main entrance to the College of Southern Idaho on Falls Avenue. An elderly female driving the vehicle said she was blinded by the sun and couldn’t see the 32-year-old man.

As we continue to spotlight high school football programs in Southern Idaho this morning we look at Dietrich. It wasn’t that long ago that Garrett Astle was wearing the Dietrich blue uniform, scoring 24 touchdowns as a senior in 2016 en route to first team All-State honors. Now he’s the program’s head coach, taking over for his cousin, Brody Astle, who took the reins from Rick Astle, Garrett’s father, who guided Dietrich to a football state championship in 2020. It’s a program that is accustomed to gridiron success – the Blue Devils have reached at least the 1A Division 2 semifinal six times since 2007 and have reached the playoffs in each of the last eight seasons. Perhaps more impressively, in those eight seasons, against some of the best 8-man football competition they could face, Dietrich has won 14 of 21 playoff games played.
If one were to look at the 2023 Filer Wildcats football record, it would be viewed as a forgettable season. While they may have finished 0-9, their record does not reflect how competitive their team was throughout the season. Not to mention, a lot of valuable varsity experience for their underclassmen. The Wildcats return nearly every starter on both sides of the ball, and Coach Justin Brandsma cannot wait to get his team back on the field in 2024. On the offensive side of the ball, the Wildcats will have a much more balanced approach looking to utilize their size in the run game and speed in the passing game led by junior QB Tristan Rea. The Wildcats only averaged just under 14 points per game last season, but much of that could be attributed to their turnovers. Look for the Wildcats to make keeping possession of the ball a major focus in 2024.
After months of offseason fanfare by pundits and hard work by coaches and student-athletes, Boise State is finally poised to kick off the 2024 season tomorrow afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Vandal women's soccer team won their home opener on Thursday night, 2-1 against IU Indy. The Vandals get to rest for the remainder of the weekend but will be back in action next Thursday at 6 pm hosting UC San Diego in the Kibbie Dome.
Avery McBride scored two goals and had one assist to guide Boise State women's soccer to a 4-0 victory over UC Riverside, Thursday night. Boise State will take a trip to Provo, Utah, on Wednesday, Sept. 4 to play BYU. The Cougars are currently tied for 16th in the national United Soccer Coaches College Rankings. The contest will begin at 7 p.m.
Yesterday, in high school football, Buhl outlasted Weiser 9 to 6. In boys Soccer it was Burley 2 Preston 0. Canyon ridge downed Hillcrest 5 to 0. Twin Falls and Pocatello tied it up 1 each. For the girls, Minico told Declo no with a 4 to 0 score. Caldwell outlasted Jerome 2 to 0. It was Middleton 5 Wood River 0.

Grace travels to Raft River, Glenns Ferry to Rimrock, Twin Falls to Vallivue and West Jefferson travels to Wendell.
