There was a spring football game Friday with the Idaho Vandals. Jack Layne was 17-26 for 186 and two touchdowns and ran for another and Jordan Dwyer caught five passes for 98 yards and a score while the defense recorded 11 sacks to lead the black team, consisting of the Idaho first team players to a 35-21 win over the white team. The spring game wraps up the Vandal spring season. Idaho returns to action for fall camp in early August and opens the season on the road at Oregon on Aug. 31. Boise State men's tennis defeated San Diego State 4-1 Friday night in Las Vegas to win back-to-back Mountain West Tournament championships. The Broncos have now won six MW tournaments since joining the league for the 2012 campaign and 18 conference tournament titles all-time.
For the first time in Idaho, girls ages 8 to 13 are breaking onto the gridiron in a league of their own, announced by Optimist Youth Football in partnership with The Treasure Valley Women’s Football League. This new league follows a nationwide surge in girls participating in flag football. According to the NFL, approximately 474,000 young women between the ages of 6 and 17 played the sport in 2022, marking a 63% increase from 2019.
From the weekend of games on the diamonds, first for Baseball on Friday Homedale took the win in both of their games in a double header. 15 to 2 and 12 to 1. Canyon Ridge outlasted Jerome 4 to 3. Kimberly for the win over Filer13 to 3. Lighthouse for the win over Glenns Ferry 16 to 6. In another double header Mountain Home took both of the wins over Wood River. 15 to 1 in the first game and 12 to 2 in the second. Burley for the win over Minico 6 to 5.
On Saturday, Mountain Home took the win in both games of a double header with Gooding 15 to 5 in five innings and 7 to 5 in the second game. Twin Falls bruins were victors over Skyview 15 to 10.
On Friday from the softball games, Buhl defeated Homedale 13 to 3 in the first game of a double header. In the second, Homedale turned it around 18 to 1. It was Jerome over Canyon Ridge 20 to 7. Kimberly shutout Filer 10 to 0. In a double header, Wood River took both wins over Mountain Home. 16 to 1 in the first game and 19 to 4 in the second.
On the schedule for today for High School games, first for baseball, Twin Falls travels to Wood River. Wendell goes to American Falls. Glenns Ferry is on the road to Wilder. Lighthouse Christian will host Idaho City and Burley will visit Canyon Ridge.
As far as softball games, Glenns Ferry visits Wilder. Twin Falls goes to Wood River. Jerome will host Pocatello. Melba goes to Wendell and Gooding to Buhl. Wilder will visit Glenns Ferry.
In college softball, Senior Taylor Caudill pitched 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball and Alycia Flores blasted a three-run home run to lead Boise State to an 8-4 victory over New Mexico, Sunday. Boise State opens a three-game series at Colorado State, Thursday at 6 p.m.
The Idaho State Bengals, battling the elements, wrapped up a 2-1 series win over the Weber State Wildcats at Miller Ranch Stadium, Sunday afternoon. It was Weber State 6 Idaho state 4 in game one. The bengals turned it around in game two 7 to 6. In game 3 it was Idaho state 8 Weber State 0. The Bengals are back home for a pair of non-conference matchups. First the Bengals welcome the BYU Cougars to Miller Ranch tomorrow at 4:00 PM . The Bengals then face the UVU Wolverines, Wednesday at 4:00 PM to close out the regular season.
The seventh-ranked College of Southern Idaho Softball Team took care of business on sophomore day, beating Colorado Northwestern 13-3 and 11-0 Saturday in Scenic West Athletic Conference play. CSI, 41-11 overall and 29-5 in conference play, travels to USU Eastern Thursday and Friday to finish up regular season play.
